David Cameron is distancing himself from his outspoken new health minister Anna Soubry, who last week called for help to be given to terminally ill patients who want to end their lives.
Senior Tory sources said the prime minister saw no need for a change in the law or in legal guidance on the issue.
Soubry, a former barrister on the Tory left who joined the health ministry in last week's reshuffle, told the Times on Saturday that it was "ridiculous and appalling" that terminally ill people had to travel abroad to end their lives. more

Ms Soubry is the Tory MP for Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire. Brought up in the county where her father ran petrol stations until he went bust, Ms Soubry, a former TV presenter and union shop steward, has been divorced twice and brought up her two daughters as a single mother.
In last week’s government reshuffle she was appointed a junior health minister, and is said to be tipped for the Cabinet. more

Reaction in the UK to the newly appointed health minister’s call for supporting assisted suicide has been swift – this erupted last last week and already there are calls for her resignation.

Outspoken new Health Minister Anna Soubry faced a Tory call to resign after saying she backed changing the law on assisted suicide.
The former television presenter, who joined the Government in last week’s reshuffle, said it was ‘ridiculous and appalling’ that Britons had to ‘go abroad to end their life’.
Ms Soubry immediately came under attack from fellow Tories, with one warning that any attempt to change the law would be ‘fiercely’ opposed. more
