Questions About The UK Falconer Report? Read this

Here’s an excellent set of questions and answers about the Falconer Report in the UK.
The Falconer Report
Earlier this year the Falconer Report recommended legalising assisted suicide. With the credibility of the Falconer 'Commission' process being widely called into question and a ComRes poll published in January by social policy charity CARE showing that nearly half the population is concerned that if the option of ending one's life was made legal, some people would feel pressured into killing themselves, Sarah J decided to speak with Dr Peter Saunders, Campaign Director for Care Not Killing to find out his thoughts on the report. more

Norway Getting On The Pro-Death Bandwagon

Here we go again – now the Norwegians are jumping on the if-everybody’s-doing-it-it-must-be-right bandwagon, and using the Falconer Commission Report as a rationale.
British Politician Invokes Euthanasia Debate in Norway
The proposal of the Commission on Assisted Dying in Britain has stirred up the debate on euthanasia and sedation in Norway.
The chair of the commission, Labour politician Charles Falconer proposes that patient who has less than a year to live could receive assistance from their doctor to end their life. The retired doctor in Bergen, Jarle Ofstad asks the Norwegian authorities to go even further by legalizing euthanasia in the country. more

Church In Scotland Opposes Falconer Commission's Recommendations

Here’s more pushback from the church in the UK – in this case, Scotland.
‘Dangerous’ assisted suicide report
The parliamentary officer  for Scotland’s bishops has deemed as ‘dangerous’  proposals released last week calling for the legalisation of assisted suicide in England and Wales.
Pro-life and anti-euthanasia groups throughout the UK have also united in their condemnation of the 400-page Falconer Report.
The report, published by the Commission on Assisted Dying, chaired by Lord Falconer of Thoroton (right), requests that the law should change to permit assisted suicide for patients who are terminally ill and have less than a year to live. more

UK Man: Falconer Assisted Suicide Recommendations Don't Go Far Enough

With all the debate around the Falconer Commission having gone too far in its recommendations, here’s a UK man who thinks the recommendations don’t go far enough.
Commission on Dying’s ‘not radical enough’ – Melksham man
A PARLYSED Melksham man who is campaigning for the right to end his life has expressed his disappointment with the recent report from the Commission on Assisted Dying.
In December 2010 Tony Nicklinson, 57, and his wife Jane gave evidence to the commission, which was funded by author Terry Pratchett and businessman Bernard Lewis.
Last week its 400- page report said the existing law on assisted suicide “is inadequate, incoherent and should not continue”.
However it recommended that only people with less than a year to live should be offered a choice to end their lives, which doesn’t apply in Mr Nicklinson’s case.
Mr Nicklinson suffers from ‘locked-in’ syndrome, following a stroke in 2005. more

Even Lord Falconer Admits Legalized Assisted Suicide Can Be Abused

Well, well: After ensuring us that assisted suicide is A-OK, he’s had to admit that there is no way, in some cases, to avoid abuse. This, along with the inherent bias of the Falconer report, should be immediately dismissed for what it is – a sham.
No safe way to allow assisted suicide, admits Lord Falconer
A contentious plan which would allow terminally ill people to undergo an assisted suicide is not without risk, its own chief architect has admitted. more
