A debate implies that there are two opposing sides of what is to be debated. This is not the case with most of the media – their only side is the pro-death side, no matter what.

Voluntary Assisted Suicide legislation in NSW: politics vs human rights

During the current term of the NSW state government, the Greens plan to introduce the Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill, which, if passed, would legalise voluntary assisted suicide (VAS) in NSW.

This legislation is only for sound-minded people with an intolerable terminal illness, who request to be allowed to die, rather than suffer indignity and pain before inevitable death. This legislation allows them to take a prescribed lethal sedative, ideally at home with the support of family, and hence to die peacefully. more

Assisted dying: whose life is it anyway?

Every month, people from Britain make their way to Switzerland to seek the help of the Dignitas organisation. More than 150 have made the one-way trip so far, often in wheelchairs, sometimes on stretchers. Every one of them has made it clear repeatedly and in writing that they want to die and that they have medical evidence that lends support to their wish. Every one of them would prefer to die in Britain and preferably in their own homes, rather than make the journey to a foreign country.

That people in such distressing circumstances make these arrangements is the direct responsibility of others - who profess kindness, but who practice cruelty. People of extreme religious views have blocked attempts to bring the law of England and Wales more into accord with that of Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg or the Netherlands. Opinion polls demonstrate that they possess only minority public support, but their political influence is far greater than their numbers warrant. more

Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill 2010

The Greens’ Rights of the Terminally Ill Bill 2010 will enable terminally ill patients, of sound mind and whose pain and suffering cannot be alleviated, to voluntarily request and receive assistance from a medical practitioner to end their own lives.

Unfortunately the best palliative care does not provide relief for approximately five percent of terminally ill patients, who suffer excruciating pain at the end of their lives. This bill enables those small numbers of terminally ill people to take control of their own dying if that is their wish. more
