Aussie: "Assisted Suicide Defense" Fails


We’re seeing more and more that people involved in plain old murder are using the “assisted suicide defense.” In this Aussie case, it didn’t work.
Assisted suicide murder conviction appeal fails
A man who helped a woman he barely knew to take her own life with a heroin overdose has failed to have have his murder conviction re-assessed and overturned.
Stephen Wayne Carter was jailed for life in 2003 for the murder of Gail Marke in March 2000 at Tewantin, on the Sunshine Coast.
During the trial, the Supreme Court in Brisbane heard Carter had been pestered for two years by an acquaintance, Patrick Smythe, to supply him heroin so he could commit suicide.
The court heard Carter barely knew Ms Marke, who was a friend of Mr Smythe's, but that he helped her die as well. more
