China Convicts In Assisted Suicide

In China, a conviction for assisting in a suicide. I wonder how long it will be until the pro-deathers start asking for a “conversation” about legalizing assisted suicide out east?

Some Confirmation On Chinese Organ Harvesting

Seems we’re getting some confirmation on what we’ve known for quite a while – the Chinese are harvesting organs from political prisoners.
Chinese Regime Indirectly Admits Organ Harvesting: Bioethics Professor
Professor Arthur Caplan heads the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. He said on Tuesday that China’s Vice Minister of Health Huang Jiefu may have confirmed what some rights group have long suspected - that the Chinese regime has been harvesting organs from imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners as part of the regime’s persecution of the spiritual practice.
Huang acknowledged last week that executed prisoners remained the primary source of organs for the country’s expanding organ transplant industry. more

Organ Harvesting In China: Why The Dismay?

I’m sometimes vaguely amused at bioethicists being shocked by anything – in this case how China harvests the organs of condemned criminals. This has been going on for a long time and will no doubt continue. Perhaps these ethicists should flag some of their colleagues who are pushing the very same ideas under the guise of “definitions of death” and “after birth abortion.”
Medical Community Disturbed by China’s Organ Centers
A recent report by a human rights watchdog group linking would-be defector and former police chief Wang Lijun with research into organ harvesting has brought outspoken condemnation of Wang’s mixture of police work and medical innovation from members of the medical community within the United States.
The report, released by the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (WOIPFG), shows that while serving as police chief in Jinzhou City, Wang Lijun founded the On-Site Psychology Research Center (OSPRC) on the subject of human organ transplant inside the building of the Public Security Bureau. more

China: Grisly Tale Of Organ Harvesting

This is a chilling, grisly read about how China harvests organs from prisoners. They do so because nobody is prepared to stop them. However, there are enough grisly reports about the way organ donors are handled to know that it's not only China that disrespects and kills its citizens.
The Xinjiang Procedure
To figure out what is taking place today in a closed society such as northwest China, sometimes you have to go back a decade, sometimes more.
One clue might be found on a hilltop near southern Guangzhou, on a partly cloudy autumn day in 1991. A small medical team and a young doctor starting a practice in internal medicine had driven up from Sun Yat-sen Medical University in a van modified for surgery. Pulling in on bulldozed earth, they found a small fleet of similar vehicles—clean, white, with smoked glass windows and prominent red crosses on the side. The police had ordered the medical team to stay inside for their safety. Indeed, the view from the side window of lines of ditches—some filled in, others freshly dug—suggested that the hilltop had served as a killing ground for years.
Thirty-six scheduled executions would translate into 72 kidneys and corneas divided among the regional hospitals. Every van contained surgeons who could work fast: 15-30 minutes to extract. Drive back to the hospital. Transplant within six hours. Nothing fancy or experimental; execution would probably ruin the heart. more

Assisting In A Suicide Punished In China

This is a rare report from China, where a man assisting in a suicide is jailed. Of curse, we only have his word that his intentions were honorable - his friend is dead, so we'll never know if there were other reasons for this death.
Farmer jailed for assisting suicide triggers controversy
Zhong Yichun, an elderly farmer from east China's Jiangxi Province, never expected that helping his friend Zeng Qingxiang to commit suicide would bring him a two-year prison sentence.
Zhong buried Zeng last October as part of an agreement they made regarding Zeng's suicide. Zeng overdosed on sleeping pills and laid in a hole in the ground; Zhong called out to him 15 minutes later to ensure that he was dead before burying him.
A police investigation showed that Zeng suffered from a mental illness and had begged Zhong to help him commit suicide several times. more

Chinese Go Soft On Murder (Ahem . . .Euthanasia)

Here’s classic case of euthanasia, although not carried out by doctors – that is, of murder. But even the Chinese are going easy on this guy. Too bad.
Man in "Euthanasia Case" Given Probation
A Chinese man was given three years probation by a court in southern Shenzhen city on Thursday for his debated "euthanasia efforts" that led to the death of his ailing spouse, the Guangzhou Daily reports.
The Shenzhen People's Intermediate Court convicted 37-year-old Wen Yuzhang of intentional homicide crime and handed down a reprieved three-year jail term, the lightest penalty for the crime. He was also required to compensate 1.28 million yuan ($190,000) to the family of his wife, Hu Jing.
Investigations showed Wen removed the breathing apparatus and blood pressure monitor from his comatose wife who was receiving treatment at an intensive care unit of Shenzhen No.2 Hospital on Feb 16 last year. more
