Quebec government reveals plan to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide
Quebec’s newly elected government announced that it plans to table legislation legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide as early as next spring, even though Canadian federal law prohibits the practice.
A spokeswoman for the minority Parti Quebecois government of Premier Pauline Marois said the proposed legislation was part of the party’s election platform and was based on recommendations from the report of the province’s Special Commission on Dying with Dignity. more

Aussie Lawmakers Turn Down Pro-Deathers

Aussie lawmakers slap down the pro-deathers as they seek ever more inventive ways to further their nihilistic agenda.
Corbell rejects assisted death move
The ACT government has knocked back a bid for an inquiry into whether legal prohibitions on assisted suicide contradict the Territory's Human Rights Act.
Lobby group Dying with Dignity ACT was officially registered in July and supports the concept of ''elective death'', where adults could seek assistance to die at a time and place of their choice with the degree of assistance they believed was appropriate.
The group wants a ''peaceful death unit'' established in, or linked to, a Canberra hospital which would offer counselling services, education and facilities where people could end their lives.
The group recently requested Attorney-General Simon Corbell to ask the Law Reform Advisory Council whether provisions of the Crimes Act which prevent people from helping others to die were incompatible with human rights. more

Good on the state of Georgia – they have redone their assisted suicide law to make engaging in such hijinks a felony.

New Mexico Pushes To define Assisted Suicide

A few doctors started pushing the envelope in New Mexico about a year ago and guess what? We now have a court case asking the state to define assisted suicide. I don’t think this is some form of altruism on the part of these doctors – just the regular pro-death variety.
Assisted suicide: New Mexico court asked to redefine the term
The question before the court in New Mexico is absurdly simple and yet impossibly complex. What is the meaning of "assisting suicide"?
If a terminally ill patient refuses a ventilator or a feeding tube and the physician yields to that decision, is that assisting suicide? If the patient is in excruciating pain and requests total sedation and no nutrition or fluids, can the doctor be held accountable for his death? What if the patient seeks a prescription from her physician so that when the pain of dying is overwhelming she can seek the ultimate relief on her own? more

More On Canadian Exemption For Euthanasia

Here’s more on the Canadian ruling that a woman has the right to euthanasia while the larger case of whether euthanasia is legal winds its way through the Canadian courts.
Canadian Judge upholds decision giving woman “right” to die by euthanasia or assisted suicide
The Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC) said today that it is troubled by the decision of  the British Columbia court not to stay the constitutional exemption granted to Gloria Taylor to die by euthanasia or assisted suicide. Alex Schadenberg, executive director, said EPC urges the Government to appeal the court order issued by Justice Jo-Ann Prowse. more

Columbia Strengthens Euthanasia Law

I’m sure the Columbians are very proud that they’ve just regulated euthanasia. I’m sure this will mean, as in the Netherlands and Belgium that only thise who want to die are killed – Not!!!
Colombian Senate approves regulation of euthanasia
A Colombian Senate commission on Thursday approved the regulation of euthanasia 15 years after its decriminalization.
The bill was passed by 11 votes to 5.

Germans Look To Update Euthanasia Laws

The Germans are getting themselves on the slippery slope as they discuss updating laws on euthanasia. From what I can tell, the discussion so far hasn’t really reminded the Germans of their dark, pro-death past.
Germany seeks to clarify euthanasia laws
Debate heats up in Germany as politicians propose a bill that would update the country's laws on euthanasia. Germany is currently in the middle of Europe's extremes on the issue, and Germans themselves are also divided.
Many in Germany are unhappy with current euthanasia legislation, according to a study conducted by pollsters Emnid. The poll found that almost 50 percent of Germans say they want professionals to be able to help people who wish to die. more

Aussie Pro-Deathers: Law Is "Miscarriage of Justice"

Here’s how pressure builds from the pro-deathers, in this case in Australia. Man convicted under the law of assisting in a suicide. Family calls it a “miscarriage of justice.” I call it justice served.
Family in despair at jailing of Merin Nielsen for assisting in suicide
THE family of former teacher Merin Nielsen, the first Queensland man to be jailed for assisting in a suicide, have labelled the court's decision a "miscarriage of justice".
Nielsen, 50, was jailed for three years by Brisbane Supreme Court Justice Jean Dalton yesterday after a jury found him guilty of helping his elderly friend Frank Ward, 76, to kill himself at Clayfield on June 20, 2009. more
