The Pro-Death Need To Assail The Catholic Church

Here’s a pro-death piece masquerading as reasoned argument. I’m always fascinated at the levels of vitriol (in this case well disguised) hurled at the Roman Catholic Church for its stand against assisted suicide and euthanasia.
How the Catholic Church Misunderstands Death With Dignity
My father, a lifelong atheist, died at 91 in a Catholic hospice center. He received excellent, compassionate care from his nurses and from a doctor who willingly administered the morphine needed to ease his suffering -- although, she advised, it would hasten his death. Did she violate the doctrine of a church actively opposing a Death with Dignity proposal now on the ballot in Massachusetts?
The medical team was administering palliative care, not assisting in a suicide. According to a Church spokeswoman, "You can have whatever level of morphine you need to control the pain, even if that level of treatment hastens death." Palliative care is "legitimate," even when it risks "shortening life," Cardinal Sean O'Malley explains -- so long as "the intent is not to hasten death, but only to ease the pain of a dying patient." more

Canadian Catholic Church Opposes Proposed Euthanasia Changes

As always, the Roman Catholic Church is at the forefront of opposing euthanasia in Canada. Would that there were other institutions (religious and secular) which would do the same.
Quebec's Catholic bishops to lobby against doctor-assisted euthanasia
Roman Catholic bishops in Quebec are pondering action to prevent the provincial government from giving the green light to proposed doctor-assisted euthanasia.

Yup, Euthanasia Is Killing. Period

Gee, a breath of fresh air from Aussie. Sydney's Roman Catholic Bishop makes it simple. It's killing, stupid.
‘Euthanasia means killing someone’: Sydney Cardinal issues blunt pro-life challenge
While euthanasia remains illegal in Australia, the country is a centre of international lobbying work to legalize the practice, and now the cardinal archbishop of Sydney, the leader of the Catholic Church in Australia, is calling for citizens, especially Catholics, to strenuously oppose it. more

Catholic Church: The Pro-Deathers Within

This is a disturbing but unsurprising fact - even many of those charged by their profession to err on the side of life think the culture of death is just dandy. Very disappointing.
Bishops Betrayed on Assisted Suicide
Even as the nation’s bishops react with alarm to a recent Montana Supreme Court ruling allowing physician-assisted suicide, their efforts are being undermined by ethics and law professors at several Jesuit universities. more

Pro-Deathers Begin To Infiltrate Churches

The pro-deathers continue to seep into every single place they can with their message of a happy death. It’s not surprising, therefore, that they have begun to infiltrate organized religion to co-opt churches and their members to their will. They’ve already started doing this in the hospice movement.
Speakers at CHA workshop assess tactics of assisted suicide proponents
DENVER (CNS) -- Proponents of assisted suicide are using the U.S. church's own revised ethical directives as "propaganda to promote" their cause, a physician and Franciscan brother told a workshop at the Catholic Health Association convention June 14.
Compassion & Choices, a national organization created from the merger of the former Hemlock Society and Compassion in Dying in 2005, is telling people that the "Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services" now require that "everyone will have a feeding tube rammed down their throat" at Catholic health facilities, said Franciscan Brother Daniel P. Sulmasy. more

Nuns Now Into Euthanasia? Say It Ain't So!!

Say it ain't so – NUNS committing euthanasia?? Thus little snippet from California raises the possibility, although obviously this is only an allegation. Would it surprise me if it were found t be true? Nope. We already know, unfortunately, that other Roman Catholic entities support killing – there are some church-run hospitals that allow for both futile care and abortion. Go figure . . .
Euthanasia Alleged At Auburn Sisters Of Mercy
AUBURN, Calif. (CBS13) ― A former employee of a community for retired nuns has sent shock waves through the Catholic community after claiming a nun was euthanized while staying there, an allegation the religious organization has vehemently denied.
Jeanne Reaume, an employee at the Sisters of Mercy in Auburn for 15 years, filed a civil suit in Placer County claiming she was fired without cause and alleging that a mercy killing took place.
The complaint says a nun visiting a sick sister in 2005 took morphine from a medical locker and locked herself in the sick woman's room with other visiting nuns. During that time, the lawsuit claims, staff pounded on the door and all they heard with singing coming from the room. more
